These figures are taken from the larger picture “Unsafe passage”

to form a triptych with “Syrian Piéta”. The title reverses the usual

direction of travel of the flight of Joseph, Mary and Jesus into Egypt

from Herod’s persecution and suggests the persecution of the

Copts. How many young fathers have had to carry their children

across the sea and what would drive them to do that?
